Life and Death Situation

In a far away country, there is a strange law that is followed for death sentences. Two papers, one with “LIFE” written on it and the other with “DEATH” written on it, are folded up and placed in a hat. A person with a death sentence is permitted to pick out one of the papers. If a person picks one with “LIFE” written on it, he or she is set free. Otherwise, the death sentence is carried out.

You’ve been sentenced to death in this country with this strange law. Furthermore, an acquaintance of yours has substituted the paper with “LIFE” written on it with another one with “DEATH” written on it. This acquaintance of yours informs you of what he has done and that you are doomed to die. Assuming you are not allowed to speak to anyone about what this person did, nor you will have time to switch the papers or the hat, how will you avoid this certain death?

Answer
You pick a paper and eat it, leaving only “DEATH” paper in the hat. This will lead others to believe that you must have had “LIFE” paper. You are then set free.
